Does your Office Design make it a Fun Place to Work?
"Work hard - Play even harder" is becoming a popular motto for a new wave of companies; influencing their choice of office design and layout. Companies moving office are opting for less conventional office designs - putting an end to rows of cramped up desks, flickering flourescent lights and clunky comms equipment. And if Google's new office design is anything to go by, the idea of the run, playground-style workplace is well and truly back in fashion.
Google's new office design boasts beacons of colour with sporting indoor ski-lifts, tropical jungle huts and slides between floors. And it's not only the internet giant whose setting the trend. Other young companies such as Innocent Drinks with it's London office furnished with AstroTurf, park benches and towering plants.
With people now working longer hours than ever before, the whole work-life home scenario is becoming more blurred and Office Fit-Out Companies are offering alternative and more funky office designs - where appropriate for companies who want to do something different.
Richard Kauntze, chief executive of the British Council for Offices (BCO), a commentator on workplace design, believes that we're witnessing a trend: "Clearly the flagship examples, such as Google, have led the way, but we're now seeing very young companies, often led by very young people, reinforcing the desire for a workspace that is less conventional."The reason for this, he argues, goes right to the heart of how we choose to live and work in the 21st century. "When I started in the late 1980s the office was very detached from home, it was a very formal, hierarchical space with cellular offices. Jumping forward 20 years, people in their late teens and early 20s have grown up with technology from birth, they don't have this division between work and home; they are used to doing work-like activities at home."
The benefits of funky office design go far beyond just the visual "wow" factor. There are productivity benefits too, that translate into staff wanting to work for them, more efficient staff performance, with a feelgood factor about where they work.
