Don't waste money when you move office
A business relocation can be a costly endeavour and your budget can be drained quickly, in all the wrong areas if you do not pay attention to these common relocation money-drainers:
Not using a Property Agent
Hunting for office space is time-consuming, and if you're trying to do this alongside your existing workload (are you mad?!) the process can be lengthy process and be thwarted with difficulties. A Property Agent will work hard on your behalf to secure the right office that's right for your business, and also carry out the lease negotiations that WILL save you money. Attempting to negotiate your own lease will not provide you with enough leverage you are likely to need to achieve a favourable leasing deal.
Too much or too little office space
The first, and most important, requirement you will need when briefing your property, and it's often an area which is overlooked. Renting too much space is likely to mean you will be paying too much office rent than you really need, and too little office space will mean you will have to up sticks again in the near future to cater for additional employees. Use this office space calculator and help you work out your existing and future office space requirements.
Leaving your IT Relocation to the last minute
When you move to new offices, you will need to transfer your IT equipment and phones over to the new office and this requires more than just plugging in your equipment at the new location. An IT relocation needs to be planned well in advance of the move so the correct network cabling and phones lines are installed prior to move day. Doing so, will dramatically reduce your chance of experiencing business downtime, and therefore not wasting money.
Not switching providers
An office move is a great opportunity to switch utilities, telecom and other office providers and negotiate a new contract under better terms. By phoning around a few suppliers to get quotes, you may be surprised to see how much money you can save by switching providers.
Not having a budget
There will be plenty of ways your budget is going to get spent when your business relocates, you just need a way to manage and control your costs better. This moving office budget template will outline all the likely costs in an office move and provides you with an customised template from which to work from.
