Dos & Don'ts of Office Design
If you've never been involved in an office design project before, a basic understanding of the Dos and Don'ts of Office Design will guide you through the process and ensure you don't make any common - and costly mistakes.
• DO
Create a detailed office design brief which includes your vision of how you want the office to look, your business and communication needs, and ask an Office-Fit-Out company to carry out a Workplace Appraisal to assess work patterns, traffic flow and staff and team interaction.
• DO
Make use of natural light. This not only increases worker productivity, it also saves money on energy bills - so you could be lowering your operating costs by doing so.
• DO
Get expert advice from an Office Fit-Out Company. Even if you are a small company and you don't have a big budget to spend on office design, you at least need to have the right layout and floor plan for your business to function at its best.
• DO
Involve your staff before making any decisions on the design and layout of your new office. What do they like about the existing office? What can be improved upon? Your office design will then be based on informed feedback rather than a let's-see-what-works approach.
• DON'T
Forget to factor in enough time to complete your office design and fit-out once you've signed the office lease. You need to leave at least 6 weeks to complete everything - even more depending on the size of your business.
• DON'T
Make your IT requirements a "bolt-on" to your office design. Instead, work with your internal IT Team to ascertain the technology needs in the new office and make sure your IT infrastructure and network cabling is in place from the very beginning.
• DON'T
Let costs for your office design project spiral out of control. Agree a budget from the outset with your Office Fit-Out Company and stick to it. A good Office Design Company will provide you with a detailed estimate before any work begins.
• DON'T
Do any works prior to getting your Landlord's consent. A design proposal needs to be put together to present to your Landlord, so that all works are agreed by them before you make any changes to the space.
