How to avoid any risks associated with an IT Relocation
An office move can cause a number of problems and cause potential disruption when relocating IT equipment to a new building, but there are ways to minimise risk and prepare for any problems you may encounter during an IT relocation:
Plan ahead
The importance of planning ahead for your IT relocation cannot be overstated. There is more to think about than just migrating your equipment over to the new office, you need to install the right infrastructure in the new location so that there is minimum disruption when you arrive at the new office.
Consolidate & De-clutter
Like most projects, successful IT consolidation requires time and methodical execution. Consolidating your IT infrastructure gives you the opportunity to scale and secure data for the future and help you operate more efficiently in the new environment. Carry out a full review and assessment of your IT equipment and infrastructure. Decide what needs renewing, what needs upgrading, and what can be recycled. An office move is the ideal time to upgrade technology and have new infrastructure installed.
Backup
Backup all your data prior to the move. A full backup can take time to run, so try to archive as much material as possible in the weeks prior to the move to reduce the backup time.
Prepare for disaster
No matter how far and thorough in advance you plan, there are often ‘unknowns’ that happen during a relocation. Anticipating these is half the battle to being able to deal with them effectively. Create or revise a disaster recovery plan and test it over and over to ensure that recovery instructions are as clear as possible.
Involve the right people
The physical shift of your move will be done by a removals company, but you will also need an IT relocation company to be responsible for commissioning computers, restarting servers, and testing equipment and phone lines. They will need to be involved in the planning leading up to the move so they understand the business critical issues are and timings to work towards.
