Key Skills required to Organise an Office Move
Organising an office move is a huge undertaking, and it requires someone within your organisation to lead the project, delegate tasks and ensure goals and deadlines are met.
Choosing the right person to organise and manage the moving office process is crucial. Not only do they need to possess the right skills, but they also need the right support and resources to manage the process efficiently. Depending on the size and needs of your organisation, the person responsible for the office move is usually the office manager. If you don’t have an office manager, quite often the responsibility lies with a PA or even the HR Manager. Regardless of who you choose, make sure they have the skills and resources outlined below to execute the move successfully and dedicate enough time to the project.
Skills
There are certain personal skills that are necessary to be a good project manager, including:
- Clear verbal, listening and communication skills to gather information and articulate it to other team members and the wider organisation
- The aptitude to solve problems and think on their feet
- Strong organisation skills and close attention to detail
- The ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines
- Experience setting and working with budgets is an advantage
Time
Organisating an office move is likely to take up a big chunk of this person’s time. In the early stages of the move, this will be less so, but as soon as office space has been found, and the design, fit-out and IT infrastructure of the new office starts, the office move project manager will be required to attend project meetings to ensure that the project specifications, timeline and budget are on track.
Resources
There are two essential resources required to support the project manager during the office move planning process: i) An Office Relocation Team comprising colleagues within the organisation to delegate tasks to, as well as a team of office relocation providers to manage the component stages of the move. ii) A comprehensive Moving Office Checklist that details all the tasks required when moving office and an outline sequential plan.
