Managing your Telecommunications when you Relocate
Relocating your telecommunications equipment can be one of the most problematic aspects of an office move. It is also one of the most critical parts of the move to get right, as let’s face it, most businesses require at least one dedicated telephone line to be able to operate. Telephone and phone lines require a clear relocation plan and a detailed understanding of requirements so that you do not suffer any business downtime during the transfer.
Here are some tips to help you manage your telecommunications during an office relocation:
New office connectivity
You will need to review line capacity in the new office to see whether you need to order additional phone lines. You will need to do this as early as possible in order to have them ready for you well before your move.
Most telecom providers specify long lead times that are approximately:
- ISDN30: 6-8 weeks
- ISDN2: 4-6 weeks
- Broadband *DSL: 1-2 weeks (requires analogue line)
- Analogue: 1-2 weeks
- Leased Line/integrated T1: 3 months
You will also need to ensure that any phone lines that are already in situ are in the right place according to where your workstations will be situated.
Think numbers!
When you have found your new office space, you will need to inquire as to whether or not you can keep your existing phone number. If you are moving within the same geographical telephone exchange area, then this shouldn’t prove to be a problem but it’s worth checking with your telecom provider in advance so that you can set the wheels in motion of changing and communicating your new phone number. If you have to move to a different phone number, make sure you set up call forwarding from the old number to the new one to avoid missing any important calls when you move.
Review your phone system
Relocating is always an ideal time to review whether your existing phone system is meeting your requirements and that your current system has all necessary built-in features to enable you to operate effectively. Technology may have moved a long way since you last purchased your phone system, and you may even be able to save money by upgrading your phone system and switching telecom providers. We highly recommend using an IT & Telecoms Company to assist with the technical aspect of relocating your phone lines. This support will save you time, money and a lot of stress and frustration.
