Tips for employees when moving office
If your company is about to move office, you might be wondering what part you, as an employee, will take. Most companies that are undergoing office relocation will require some input from staff, normally to help with the packing up of belongings and sorting out of the 'old' office. Below are some simple tips on how to prepare for an office move to avoid getting caught out on the big day.
First speak to the Boss
First speak to your line manager regarding any restrictions on what you are actually allowed to take with you to the new office. It may be worth taking a look at the new office layout design to ascertain where you will be sitting and what size of new desk and drawer space you will be allocated. You should also find out how to dispose of unwanted items and office documents correctly.
Packing up office documents
This can be one of the most time consuming elements of any office move. When in doubt, always refer to your Line Manager regarding which documents need to be transferred to the new office and which documents can be recycled or shredded. Once you know which articles need to be moved, you can arrange the files in alphabetical order before placing them in boxes. Make sure the boxes are not too large to avoid papers falling out or getting muddled up. Mark the box with your name, the new location and an indication of whether the box is confidential or not.
Packing up your desk and personal items
The key to packing up a desk is to only take the essential items that you cannot be without on a daily basis, the rest can be binned or better still donated to charity. With regard to personal items, it’s a good idea to assess how much room you will have in your new office space. This will help you to determine whether items such as plants and picture frames are suitable to take with you. It is also a good idea to take your personal items home during the actual office relocation, particularly those of any value. Your company’s insurance may not cover expensive items should they get damaged or lost.
